In 1976 it expanded to include the entire month of February and was renamed Black History Month. Born Lottie Hawkins in Henderson, North Carolina, in the late 1880s her family moved north to settle in Cambridge, Massachusetts.



February is African American History Month, a time to explore the history of African Americans, to learn about their struggles, and to mark their successes. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, a pioneer in education and race relations, was born on a farm near Henderson, the granddaughter of a slave. Charlotte Hawkins Brown (June 11, 1883 – January 11, 1961) was an author, educator, and founder of the Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, North Carolina.
She often spoke out against the unfair treatment of African Americans, and she fought for equality. Hawkins Brown Room Located on the terrace level, the Hawkins Brown Room accommodates up to 80 seated guests and 100 at a standing reception.

Charlotte’s birth came at a time when most of the black families were moving north.

Named for Charlotte Hawkins Brown, educator and founder of the Palmer Memorial Institute in nearby Sedalia, it has 1,500 square feet when fully opened, and can divide into three different sections. After graduating she went to the Massachusetts State Normal School at Salem, and studied to become a teacher.

Today, the campus provides the setting where visitors can explore this unique environment where boys and girls lived and learned during the greater part of the 20th century. Most walked a long way to reach the one-room schoolhouse. In 1901 Charlotte Hawkins started teaching at a rural school in Sedalia, near Greensboro. She succeeded in showing for all the world to see what one young African American woman could do.

Born in Henderson, Brown moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her family when she was young, and was educated there.

Charlotte Hawkins Brown remained at Palmer Institute for 50 years before retiring as president and died in 1961.
