Something appealing. However Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford and Michael Horden all put in fine performances and nearly steal the show from Mostel. Directed by Richard Lester. But the road to romance is blocked with stunning surprises, cunning disguisesand the wildest chariot race ever! There are some musicals in my collection that looked pretty awful on DVD, but the blu-ray was a big improvement. Sort of a bawdy tribute to slapstick comedy and vaudeville, the film is uniformly wonderful, the pace fast, and the jokes funny. This show is based on a series of Roman comedies by Plautus. But the songs are decent, even if the American casting of Phil Silvers, Zero Mostel and Jack Gilforddo make it a bit OTT at times. It's great and I can't understand why I've never heard of it before it appeared next to other films I was looking at buying.

How ever as a comedy it just falls short of the mark. Whatever the film may have lost from the Broadway production it recovered in other ways beyond the limits of theatre. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a classic in its own right. Yes! I remember laughing my head off almost the entire time :) You know how sometimes when something was wonderful when you were a kid is better left there because it looses its appeal when you revisit it in the present..? The Hollywood movie is shorter than the Broadway production. Features Zero Mostel and all star cast! It is obvious where they got the idea of Frankie Howard's Up Pompeii from, but then he did play Zero Mostell's part in the London production. This really surprised me. Pseudolus (Zero Mostel) is the laziest slave in Rome, and has one wish, to purchase his freedom. Not a great filmed musical, it worked better on stage. Today, as an adult, I can actually enjoy the jokes I couldn't have understood when I was younger. The all star cast (including Buster Keaton for your historians!)
