This is a simply brilliant piece of articulate, educated northern working class writing, and is not to be missed. But everywhere reality undercuts his dream of Afropea; he ends up with a “sullied utopia”. Pitts’s story starts to take on the dimensions of an epic saga. Down to earth, unpretentious, unafraid of the messiness and cracks in narratives of authenticity, deeply human and desperately needed. I find that merely recording facts and numbers strips study of humans of any humanity. The model takes into account factors including the age of a rating, whether the ratings are from verified purchasers, and factors that establish reviewer trustworthiness.
I'm deeply torn by this book, which I found enthralling, informative, and innovative, but which is also littered with the sorts of problems that arise when the methodology is really thought through. This book aims to bring black Europe to the rest of Europe. Well written and well researched. As an African American who has traveled to western Europe 2-4 times a year for the past 13 years, visited seven countries, and intends to retire there by the end of this decade I feel very comfortable and well treated as an American tourist, but I also recognize that my experience is very different from Blacks from Africa and the Caribbean, particularly recent ones, who are often viewed very differently than I am.
I could have continued to follow this, highly personal journey for twice as long. I find it makes the book more readable, and dispels any niggling concerns I might otherwise have about the author's qualifications for writing such a book.
