With the errata changing the striking distance from "in range" to "under the cloud", doesn't that mean the striking range is 60ft radius not 120ft?When you cast the spell, you must pick a point overhead within range (120 ft).
Very few combats are going to occur where both of these are true.

The other aspect that bumps lightning bolt up closer (if not equal to) fireball is that there are is an excellent fire based 2nd level spells scorching ray.I've found with a sorcerer that I took lightning bolt for my 1 3rd level blaster spell because I did not want to take yet another fire based damage spell and lightning bolt is at least comparable. There is no real "striking range" other than being "a point you can see under the cloud"Its a 120 ft diameter cylinder, so it'll be pretty hard for enemies to get out of reach, and just because you can't concentrate on hold spells doesn't mean you can't grapple a creature or have your teammates do it for you.
