Once you could hike past the third (top) lake over the mountain and cross the mountain pass into Kyrgyzstan, but we were told that the border is now closed and it's illegal, therefore dangerous, to try and do this.This lake is just outside the city of Almaty and is surrounded by mountains. The hotel is quite hard to find and you'll have to pay "enter fee" about 2 times in the park, then mountains, so better go there with the daylight. The Kolsai Lakes, which are about 36km from Lake Kaindy, are far more popular. Wonderful guide who really went out of his way to look after us & make us feel welcome. Important for timing to get back as the trail is not marked and you don't want to be wandering around steep woody slopes in the dark.
