Now, there are four.While that sounds like a boon for farmers, that’s not necessarily the case.Joe Smith, who runs Smith’s Acres Farm in Niantic, said farmers have to work harder to make the same amount they used to.For example, Smith remembered working at the lone Stamford farmers market in Columbus Park 20 years ago, and how he could make $1,000 in one day all by himself.That doesn’t happen anymore, partly because Smith needs an assistant to deal with the faster-pace market, but also because customers have many more options when it comes to getting fresh produce in their city, creating competition.The cost of producing food has gone up as well, as the price of fertilizer, plants, and labor has grown.As markets have become more prevalent, each farm’s piece of the pie has diminished, Smith said.“The markets start to take a little from each other eventually,” he said.Stamford currently boasts four markets. Both markets are run by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District and will operate through Oct. 31, 2020.Both markets will follow federal and state guidelines to ensure a safe and healthy market.
